Tell me one holiday tradition that your family always partakes in that just makes your day. Or something odd that you would never admit to loving.

Has anyone In Australia heard about the Bonsoy recall.

Apparently very high levels of iodine from the seaweed used in it.

Just a heads up...but this IS cheap vegan, and BOnsoy is insanely expensive but seeing as this is Xmas and the decadent season.....

How long does almond milk last after it's opened? I just bought some Almond Breeze almond milk. It has an expiration date on the carton, but doesn't state how long it last after opening.

Also, this is my first time trying almond milk. Do you guys no of any better brands or less expensive ones?

Weight gain foods/recommendations anyone? I'm pretty sure I'm near to hitting underweight for my height and I just haven't been feeling in the mood to stuff myself or anything. So I need some high calorie recommendations.

Also if anyone has any favorite potato or sweet potato recipes that'd be helpful too. I've been doing a lot of just microwave potatoes out of laziness. I also haven't found any decent vegan sour cream recipes. Do they exist?

In return, Spicy Orange Yams (which I've also been making quite a bit lately). They're really easy and healthy. (Off of VegNews)

2 tablespoons non-hydrogenated margarine, melted
Juice of 2 oranges (1/2 to 3/4 cup)
1/3 cup maple syrup
1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
5 large sweet potatoes, peeled and sliced 1/4 inch thick
1/2 cup pecans, toasted (garnish)
What You Do:

1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. In a large mixing bowl, combine the first 4 ingredients and stir until well combined. Add the sliced potatoes, stir well, and transfer to a lightly oiled 9x13 baking dish.
2. Cover and bake until the sweet potatoes are just tender, about 40 minutes. Stir once or twice during that time to distribute the liquid over the potatoes. Uncover, and bake until the glaze thickens, about 10 to 15 minutes. Keep warm and sprinkle with pecans before serving.

Hey all--

So it looks like I will be ringing in 2010 without wisdom teeth- that's right, extraction time! Long story short, it looks like it'll be minor surgery (impacted!), and I know there are going to be a few days where I'll be depending on soup and smoothies, if I want to eat at all.

Normally, I'd make a big batch or two of soup in advance, freeze it and be good to go. Tricky part? Staying with my mother who tries, but isn't too savvy (you mean you can't just have the broth? even if there isn't any meat in it?)- I know she'd be willing to buy me progresso or something, but I'd rather have homemade...

So, what are some super easy/basic soups/smoothies that are nutrient-rich and with limited chewing? Slurp-ing only type soups? I was thinking of making a miso soup, and I should still have leftovers of the butternut squash soup (pureed) I'm making for XMas appetizer... Maybe a lentil? Or split pea?

This is my first actual fanzine. It's 1/8th size, 16 pages on ivory paper, with a typewritten chronicle of my experience seeing Leonard Cohen perform at the beginning of November interspersed with handwritten lyric excerpts.

Hello everyone! Just a little update about the new zines available at Black Light Diner Distro!

HELLO ALABAMA: A ONE-SHOT DISASTER (Tuscaloosa, AL)

Courtney's (Muse) anti-love letter to Alabama was written after she packed up and moved from North Carolina to Tuscaloosa, Alabama to attend library science school. The move came with an unexpected downside in the racist and conservative attitudes of some of her classmates. While certainly not indicting all Alabamans, Courtney describes the self-silencing she must go through to be safe in her new location, from being forced to tear a pro-choice sticker off her car to having to check her political ideals at the door in order to have at least a few friends. There's also a piece about the underfunded and underutilized recycling program in Tuscaloosa, and how its mismanagement by clueless city officials has had devastating consequences for the working-class community who must live next to the plant. I've never moved to a drastically different geographical location (yet), but as someone who grew up in a more conservative area the themes of alienation rang true, and I think this would be a great zine for anyone who feels out of step with their surroundings, whether they're a native or a newcomer.

Also, I'm really on the lookout for some new zines to carry, in particular personal comics. If you have something you think I'd be interested in, drop me an email or send it to me!

Thanks for reading,
Erica

Sorry I've been absent from this particular community for so long, but I'm definitely still involved with zines and... I've decided to take that leap and start a distro! I've been spending many hours planning, writing, and trying my darndest to make a decent website without many design skills. Here's the description from the website: Mad Hatter Distro, named for Mab’s favorite character in the book Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, is a new distro in Pennsylvania that focuses on well-written perzines, litzines, mini zines, and fanzines, and aims to help new zinesters bring their writing to the world. The site is up and running now, though it's a bit sparse at the moment and the catalog is empty. You'll find the full submission guidelines, payment information, and the distro's blog there. The catalog will be updated periodically so you can preview what zines will be available, and I will begin accepting orders March 1st. Visit: http://madhatterdistro.weebly.com. You can also read my distro thoughts and see pictures of my new "zine space" (I dedicated an entire cabinet to zines today) on my zine blog: http://ratbratzine.wordpress.com.

Volthair #2: The Crane Zine
One free print!

Volthair #1: My Intentions are Good
: This first zine is about my first year of college, some of my tangent past, getting over my first boy attachment, meeting new and old souls, and searching for the sake of searching. Most of it's about trying. A dirty bathroom wall once said "my intentions are good." These are seamless intentions within us are just tumbling life's events, that's all. 1/4 size, 50 Pages

Volthair #2:The Zine Crane
is about the hot Austin summer of 2008 to the 2009 cold spring. It is about the young throws of unlikely love, the life of a pbs intern, a long road trip away from Austin, happenings, more happenings, feelings of death, the age of seventeen and the search for quality. It is furthermore, what are attempts to remember details and stories. Whenever anything seems disorienting, please know these are my hands folding and unfolding a crane. I am trying to remember my history and my experiences, fold by fold. 1/4 size, 48 pages

Hi guys,

I posted here almost a year back about a horror zine I was putting together. Unfortunately life got in the way and it never got made. Well, it's getting made now.

It's called 'It's Alive!' and it will probably be a one-off zine, hopefully out by February.

It's very much in the early stages at the moment, but if anybody would like to contribute that would be great.

As I'm only just getting started on it, I can't give an exact description of what I'm looking for, but I'm hoping it will turn out to be a fun and witty zine for horror fans, full of film reviews (classics, b-movies and modern), interviews and a few other horror related features such as reviews of ghost walks, the scariest places to visit in the UK, scary stories etc. Here's one of my film reviews that will be going in, to give you an idea of what to expect.

If you've got anything you think might fit in, please drop me an email to siobhanlouise@gmail.com and I'll get straight back to you.

Additionally, if you think It's Alive! sounds interesting and you want to order a copy or find out more about it, send me an email to siobhanlouise@gmail.com, or sign up to my blog for updates.

Thanks guys!

(x-posted, sorry!)
